FROM BRITTANICA online:
" loving cup, large, two-handled cup, often made of silver, that may take many forms. In the past, at weddings, banquets, or meetings, a loving cup might be shared by a number of persons for ceremonial drinking, symbolizing friendship and unity. Loving cups are often given as trophies to winners of games or other competitions. The French coupe de mariage is a somewhat shallow form of loving cup. "
OK. With that established, I knew that the lovely that had recently come into my possession was just that, a loving cup.
A tarnished beauty.
I was completed taken by the lovely details..... all scrolly and flowery.
And engraved! And almost antique....dated 1912!
I was on the fence about keeping this lovely but in the end my desire to downsize my life won out. I listed it on ebay last month and I was glad that I did. Suffice it to say that loving cups are a hot commodity.
I am linking up to Silver Sunday hosted by Gypsy Fish and Vintage Thingies Thursday hosted by ColoradoLady.

that is gorgeous! they ARE a hot commodity. i'm always on the lookout, but they are usually out of my price range. yours is one of the nicest i've seen - i hope you got a bundle for it!!
ReplyDeleteThere was a loving cup in my pewter collection. Did you see it? But surely not as beautiful as this one. I would have had a hard time letting go of that one too. Hope it got big bucks! happy Silver Sunday
ReplyDeleteThat is gorgeous. I just recently heard the term loving cup too. Who knew that is what they were called.
ReplyDeleteI've been wanting to find one of these for a looong time! You just can't find a piece with so much character packed into it. I've never looked on Ebay though, but I'm guessing they're pretty pricey. Good for you, if you got a boatload of cash for yours!
ReplyDeleteYou have a lovely example of a true vintage "Loving Cup". I have sold a few in my shop recently and they usually go between $75 and $150.00 ~ congrats on your super find.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous piece of silver!
ReplyDeleteOMG! It is so ornate and beautiful! Gotta keep my eye out for one. Gorgeous!

This is so beautiful. I would love to find one of these. Beautiful piece of silver. Happy VTT!
ReplyDeleteThat's an attractive trophy. I am wondering about the significance of a "Bennett Trophy" awarded to a Bennett?
ReplyDeleteThanks for the info I had no idea what they were! Hot indeed! lol
ReplyDeleteI like different pieces of silver, but never saw one of these. At least, you need a little loving just go get your cup. Silver is nice, but a pain to keep clean.
ReplyDeleteOooh what a wonderful find, I too love all the feminine details on it! And so great that you were able to make a tidy profit on it to boot! Happy VTT!
ReplyDeleteI love all the flowers and flourishes on it!
ReplyDeleteHappy VTT,
Sally
The loving cup was beautiful. I can see why you were so in love with it in all it's glory. Silver is a hot item to sell these days. Thanks for sharing this fun treasure today.
ReplyDeleteHugs, Jeanne
So beautiful! I once had a neighbor who trained race horses, married a jockey, etc.. She had a number of these loving cups, as well as engraved sterling trays from races. She used them to serve when she had parties! The loving cups would hold silverware or bread sticks or whatever she felt like putting in them!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great piece-I've never heard of these so I loved hearing about the details!
ReplyDeleteThat is a gorgeous cup and I bet you did fetch a pretty penny....they are a hot commodity right now. Every loving cup I see is definitely out of my thrifty price range!
ReplyDeleteThis one was a real beauty!
